Setting Boundaries Around eating

Setting up different kinds of boundaries is crucial as you move forward in life. These boundaries can encompass emotional, physical, spiritual, sexual, relational aspects, among others.

Establishing boundaries is essential for defining your sense of self and safeguarding yourself from undesirable circumstances. It is advantageous to acknowledge and establish boundaries at every phase of life. While there are numerous aspects of life that can benefit from boundaries, it is crucial to treat discussions about food, body image, and other health-related topics with the same level of importance. This may entail regulating how you discuss your body in contexts such as school and work, or setting boundaries on the language used by others around you, which is key to fostering a harmonious environment.

When starting to set boundaries concerning food, discussions about body image, and mealtime routines, it can be beneficial to assess the current factors in your life within these three categories: 1. Food, 2. Body Image, and 3. Meal Times.

Food:

  • Are you open to receiving feedback on your food selections, portion sizes, or combinations? Do you believe it is acceptable to provide commentary on the food choices, portions, or pairings of others?

Body Image:

  • What kind of environment do you wish to immerse yourself in? Social media tailors its content based on your interactions. Are you engaging with the latest diet trends and transformation photos of unknown models, or are you seeking content that encourages your path to well-being and a community that embraces all body types?

Mealtime:

  • Are you surrounding yourself with individuals who prioritize self-care? Are you setting a good example for those around you? Setting boundaries, such as refraining from using devices while eating to focus solely on the meal, or ensuring you sit down to eat without doing other tasks simultaneously, are examples of mealtime boundaries.

Social Media

Across different platforms like social media, magazines, ads, and TV, diet culture is widespread. Setting boundaries could mean avoiding following weight loss influencers and accounts endorsing diets, and limiting exposure to content glorifying low-weight celebrities, models, and other sources. Additionally, establishing boundaries involves self-regulation. This includes abstaining from comparing your weight and body shape to others, not comparing your meals and intake against those of friends and family, and minimizing other behaviors to establish healthy and firm boundaries.
